We get it. You’re eager to get your kitchen design started – and who can blame you?!
Believe you me, we’re just as excited to help you get going! This is why we, at the Exeter Kitchen Store, have made planning DIY kitchens possible by creating a step by step guide that helps you out with measuring up your space. A kitchen planner is the perfect tool to help you out in this situation! If you visit us in store, we can give you a kitchen project planner, however any A4 piece of paper will do. A kitchen planner is a form where you can note down all the details of your preferred kitchen and draw a rough sketch of your kitchen space. This marks all the features we need to know about to design a kitchen and has all the measurements of the room detailed on there. By providing us with your kitchen planner before we get started, we can get designing your kitchen faster! This means you’ll get your quote quicker, and before you know it, you’ll have a new kitchen on your hands!
So, without further ado, we present to you, our map to measuring your kitchen!
First up, get old school by whipping out some pen and paper! This forms the basis for your kitchen planner. If you’re keen to get out of the dark ages, we recommend bringing your smartphone to the table. These are perfect for taking some sneaky snaps of the elements of your kitchen layout that needs a little more explaining, like exposed plumbing that’s in the way. Make sure you don’t forget a ruler (or something else with a straight edge) and a tape measure as well!
Now, you should know what comes next. Since you’ve got your tools, you’ve got to start applying them!
Begin by drawing an outline of the room on your kitchen planner, then add in details like doors, windows and other structural features such as alcoves or pillars. There are a few more things you need to remember to include for the kitchen design, such as placement of the furniture you want to keep in there!
Once you’ve got all the basics sorted, don’t forget about the other kind of important stuff, like checking out where your plumbing and electrics are installed. By having the low-down on where these points are, this helps us plan your kitchen design around them! We know right – who would’ve thought?!
Once you’ve got all this out the way, then comes the measuring! Start waving your tape measure about and get those room measurements ASAP. We’d recommend breaking down your space into sections so it’s a little easier to measure. Jot down the measurements in your kitchen planner, so all the important information is visible.
At EKS we’re all about stressing less, so if you’re paranoid that your pedantic measuring is a little squiffy, you don’t need to be! If you’ve opted for a fitter recommended by us, we’ll send them out to you prior to fitting, with strict instructions not to come back until they’ve surveyed your kitchen and recorded room measurements (they’ll also gift you with a fitting quote at the same time). If you’ve decided to source your own fitter, then we’ll provide them with a Pre-Fit Survey form, which they can use to suss out the measurements for your kitchen amongst other important points.
